I Have owned this for less than one month. I cut down a rather large tree. I used this saw to cut the tops for easier removal. I keep it behind the seat in my gator (where it fits nicely). As I drive through properties I can stop and trim low branches with little effort. I have yet to run the battery down. The block at the end of the bar keeps you from cutting anything that is too big for the saw, and prevents kickback. I would reccommend this over a small gas powered saw.

After a professional arborist removed the major damage from Tropical Storm Irene, I had to deal with the small stuff. I have a gas chain saw but was tired of trying to keep it running. This Makita 4-1/2" 12 Volt Cordless saw was just what I needed. It cuts 4" maple branches like butter. I even took down a 5" black walnut sappling by cutting a "V" on one side, cut around the sides, then felling it on the other. I like the fact that I can make a cut, lay down the saw to move stuff around, then make another cut without having to restart a gas saw. So after about three hours of branch and tree removal, the saw was in use perhaps 25 minutes and still cut full strength on the original charge.
This saw has a stop at the tip of the blade. This is so you can safely notch the underside of an overhead branch before making the main cut from above.
I'm glad there's no oil reservoir which, in my experience, is the first thing to malfunction and often drips while the saw is on the shelf. You simply oil the blade every time you change batteries, about one hour of use.
The only negative observation I can make is that the light weight and short length of this saw can give you a false sense of security. It feels like a toy compared to a gas saw. I am tempted to do one handed cuts, off balance cuts, extended reach cuts and other dangerous moves. Be careful! This is still a chainsaw.
So this is a great little chainsaw, but is it worth two or more times the cost of other similar cordless saws? They all will do light duty work. Is it a BMW compared to the other Fords and Chevys? I think so but only you can decide for yourself.

Makita always does such a great job with its tools -- and it's done so again. this little saw is so handy. no need to fill the gas tank and the chain oil tank. just grab and go. great for trimming smaller branches on living or down wood. one advantage over a big saw: no finding a place to set it down while you move branches out of the way. it's instant on & off. i'm sold on it as one of the handiest tools i've ever purchased -- worth every penny. (oh, and i'm a 60 year old woman; yes, i use a big chain saw for cutting down trees. but this is just SO easy for the smaller stuff.)
